The Gaerne SG12 Boots are Gaerne’s flagship motocross boot model and easily
one of the best dirty boots available. They’ve reworked some of the features and
added two new colorways for 2014. They’re available in five colorways including
this red and white version and in sizes eight to thirteen. The fit is very snug,
but comfortable, as it should be. The length is accurate to a Brannock device,
and the width will accommodate most riders up to the narrow side of E.
Gaerne has three main goals when creating a boot, protection, comfort and
durability, and they achieve all three with the 12’s.
The high levels of comfort and protection are due in large part to the dual
stage pivot system. This system provides support for the ankle but also allows
the boot to flex, reducing fatigue and promoting confidence. The pivot points
are very unique in that they glide rather than just rotate, so your ankle and
foot bones stay in their natural line. Also, while the design of the pivot
system allows the boot to flex, it’s designed to only travel so far, so that you
are protected from over extension during a hard landing, especially one without
your motorcycle underneath you. The shin plate also features a unique design.
It’s adjustable to accommodate thicker legs and/or knee braces by removing these
The toebox and toe plate have been redesigned. The toebox is slimmer to allow
easier shifting, and the plate has a more finished look. The heel cup has also
been updated to absorb more shock.
Comfort can also be found throughout the interior of the boot. The SG-12’s have
a new gaitor made of Acronos, a waterproof yet breathable material designed to
keep the mud out. Gaerne’s memory cell foam cushions your foot and helps with
moisture control, and the insole is removable and replaceable, and features a
new energy absorbing design on the underside. It’s also perforated to help
circulate air around the boot
The ankle area is padded on the inside creating a really comfortable environment
for your foot and does a great job of absorbing impact as well. The outsole also
promotes comfort with its unique shape. Since the footboard really can’t be
flexible and still do its job properly, the sole bottom is contoured to allow
the boot to roll a little bit beneath the foot.
The outsole is also a great example of Gaerne’s efforts to create a boot with
great longevity. The sole pattern is redesigned, but the long lasting dual
compound is the same. As with all Gaerne boots, many of the high wear items are
replaceable, like the buckle and straps, the soles, the shin plates, and the
insoles. Gaerne does not have a repair shop here in the States, but the parts
are available, and items like the outsole can be replaced by any cobbler with
experience in high performance motorcycle footwear.
