Modular Helmets

Modular helmets continue to grow in popularity every year. So one might ask, why are so many people choosing modular helmets vs full face helmets? It’s simple; a modular helmet gives you the best of both worlds between a full faced and an open faced helmet. The modular helmet allows the rider to raise and lower the chin bar, thus giving them the protection of the full face with the freedom of an open face.

Here is something to consider when purchasing a modular helmet. Modular helmets with bolt on or clip on chin-bars (fully removable) tend not to have as much emphasis on crash safety as they do on keeping you free from wind and debris. These modular helmets typically have weaker chin-bars than their pivoting counterpart. Most modular helmets with pivoting chin-bars will have an EPS liner built into the chin-bar making the chin portion of the helmet a little more rigid and adding to your overall protection. Manufacturers tend to take protection into consideration when designing the pivoting chin-bar modular helmets making them a better selection as far as safety is concerned.

So why do riders love modular helmets? The answer is convenience. Modular helmets offer an escape from the confinement of a full face helmet without having to take the helmet off. Riders can eat, take a drink, or smoke (or vape) without removing their helmet. Also, carrying on a conversation at a stoplight or at the gas pump is much easier with the chin-bar raised on the modular helmet verses a full face helmet.
