The TPG line from FirstGear is their flagship touring collection that consists of some really well put together items like the Rainier and Monarch jackets, the Tech jacket, the Expedition full suit, and these awesome Escape pants. These are some of the best touring pants you can get, but at a price that is hundreds of dollars less than some of its premium competition.
These Escape pants are made of a clever material called Cocona. This is a waterproof yet breathable polyester based material that works in much the same way as Gore Tex or Drytech. Its microperforations allow vapor to pass through, but keep larger water molecules from getting into the pants.
They have a huge size range, including tall and short sizes, and are cut to be worn as a traditional style pant. You can wear these as an overpant, but be sure to take the thickness of your jeans or trousers into consideration when selecting your size. You will also want to order these a little bit longer than you would a regular pair of pants so that they are long enough to cover your boots when you’re on the bike.
FirstGear has done a great job of paying attention to the details with these Escape pants. The zippers are spring loaded waterproof YKK with the exception of the fly. This is a plastic YKK zipper that doesn’t need to be waterproof because of this gusset. They also went with a grippy pull tab on the waterproof leg pocket as opposed to the spring loaded version to make the pocket easier to operate with a gloved hand. The pockets are all angled just right to make them easy to access, including the one on the rear of the pants. The zippers on the legs are two-way, which is nice for letting some air into the pants on warmer days. Even with this feature, though, this is still going to be more of an inclement weather pant. These pants would be pretty warm on a sunny, Summer day. If you unzip the legs, you can see another clever detail on these Escape pants. FirstGear has added a gaiter to the cuff with a grippy rubber material on the inside. This is a handy feature for keeping water out of your boots, and also helps hold the cuffs down over your boots instead of using stirrups.
The level of protection with these pants is excellent. You get the latest version of D3O armor called T-5 Evo Pro in the hips and knees. Both the knee and the hip armor feature a hook and loop pouch system that allows the placement of the armor to be fully adjustable. This armor is very soft until an impact forces the armor’s molecules into alignment. Once the force is removed, the armor becomes pliable again. Also for added protection, are the subtle bits of reflective piping down the legs and across the back of the cuffs. To protect your lower back from rash, there is a zipper on the rear that allows you to attach your jacket.
