The Gaerne Midland Aquatech boot is a harder core version of the G-Adventure boot and is perfectly suited for adventure touring, and dual sport and atv riding.
The Midland is available in US men’s sizes eight to thirteen. The length is spot on. Now , that doesn’t mean that you can order these in the same size as you order your NIKE’s, it means that the sizes run true to your actual measurement. The width is generous for a European manufactured boot. My feet are on the narrow side of E, and these boots are comfortable, but if your foot’s any wider than the narrow side of E, you may find these boots a little cramped.
The Midland has features that lend itself to aggressive riding in adverse conditions. It sports a rugged, stitched on sole with an aggressive tread pattern, and a full grain leather upper with a suede panel on the medial side of the boot for heat and wear resistance. The buckle type fasteners have been upgraded to metal from the G-Adventure’s plastic ones, and the lateral side of the toe box gets a reinforced panel for an extra bit of protection.
In addition to these aggressive new features, the designers of the Midland boot have also put a large amount of focus on comfort. The insole is removable and replaceable to promote a new boot feel. The top or third buckle has been sacrificed to add this stretch panel to the calf area of the Midland. This panel works with the padded flex panels in the Achilles area and the front of the boot to maximize range of motion, which reduces fatigue. This stretch panel also accommodates riders with bigger calf muscles.
Adventure riding is an incredible workout, especially the farther you get off the beaten path. After a few months of riding, your caves are going to be like little pumpkins, and you’re going to need the extra room. Trust me.
The other area where the Midland is more aggressive than the Adventure is protection. The toe box is pretty much the same, with internal reinforcement and the pedal pads over the big toe. The heel cup is sturdier though, with rigid internal reinforcement and a TPR external protector.
This Midland also gets ankle protection, on the medial and lateral sides of the boot, that are backed with extra padding to minimize rubbing and irritation. The TPU shin protector is gone, but they have installed a protective plate that is hidden beneath this leather covering.
Lastly, you don’t have much of an adventure boot if it isn’t waterproof. Unfastening the Velcro closure and buckles, exposes the waterproof gusset and moisture wicking liner. Hidden behind this liner, is a DryTech membrane. DryTech is a material with micro pores that allows water vapor to pass through it, but repels water droplets, so your feet stay sweat free, dry, and therefore comfortable.
