HJC is having a pretty epic Fall season. They have put out some really sharp new graphics. They have introduced the awesome new CL-17 and FG-X models. And now, they give us a totally redesigned interior sunshade model, the IS-17. I’m not the only one who likes this helmet, either. The well respected German publication, Motorrad, ranked this helmet 2nd out of 12 helmets in its class.

The IS-17 is the successor to the IS-16 and is available in 6 sizes, xs-2xl. It is DOT approved and weighs in at just over 3.5 lbs. There are numerous improvements that have been made to the IS-17 over the IS-16. Many of them are a result of HJC acquiring their own wind tunnel. This helmet features an aggressive new shell design with dramatically improved aerodynamics. The buffeting has subsequently been reduced and the acoustics improved. One of the major challenges when designing helmets with interior sunshades is optimizing ventilation because you lose the ability to add eyebrow vents. Wind tunnel testing allows designers to maximize ventilation in other areas of the helmet to help keep you cool and dry. You have a large, easy to use chin vent for fog management and the top vent has been incorporated right into the interior sunshield mechanism. The air is then pulled through the helmet and is extracted at the back of the spoiler as well as through these functional venturis near the bottom.

Another improvement to the IS-17 is the new liner. The Speedcool system has been replaced by the new Supercool system. Basically, they are using a softer, plusher, higher quality feeling material. It still has the same great wicking characteristics and glasses grooves for accommodating eye glasses as the previous liner, but with a more comfortable feel. They have also improved the liner snaps. They are made of a new, more durable material and are easier to locate for pad installation. Another smart new liner feature is that the padding has the same snap configuration for each helmet size. That means that the cheek pads are now completely interchangeable for a customizable fit.

My favorite aspect of this new helmet is the optics. This helmet is outfitted with the best shield system that HJC has to offer in my opinion. The m in HJ-20m is for modified. This Pinlock prepared shield actually has a 3D recessed area for the Pinlock insert. This creates the best possible relationship between the shell, the face shield, and the interior sunshade. I really like the locking mechanism on this shield as well. You don’t have to make a conscious decision to lock it like you do with the HJ-09. If you close the shield completely, the shield will lock itself. Unlocking the shield at lower speeds opens the shield just a crack, which eliminates any remaining possibility of fogging and offers additional airflow to the face. The Rapid fire II shield replacement system is also the best HJC has ever had. A quick pull of this lever, and the shield pops right off with no coercion. Installation is also a snap and can be done with one hand. If that’s not enough cool new features for you I’ve saved the best for last. The all new HJ-V7 sunshade is a very well designed bit of optics. The mechanism is spring loaded like the previous version but they have added a dampening feature. So, the deafening crash you heard with the previous version when you retracted the shield has been eliminated. Some folks might look at a spring loaded system for an interior sunshade as just superfluous buttons. Why not just use a simpler, more reliable fixed lever? Well, I think having the ability to get that tinted shield out of your way in a hurry offers legitimate safety benefits, especially if you like to ride in unfamiliar areas like I do. Say you’re taking a spirited ride through the mountains and you accelerate out of a blind right hander straight into an unlit tunnel. It’s maybe not the most likely of situations, but it’s happened to me more than once, so I know it’s possible. I would much rather simply pat myself on the head to retract the sunshade than try to fumble around on the side of my helmet looking for a lever. Just sayin’. This shield has three positions and can be easily removed for easy cleaning or replacement. Simply lower the sunshade to its lowest position and pull the shield down, then out. Reverse that process to reinstall.
