Icon Variant Helmet.

It’s a matter of survival. In an unforgiving maze of gravel–strewn corners and malevolent steel, a rider needs protection, vision and comfort. The call to arms has been answered. Introducing the ICON Variant™ helmet. The wind tunnel-refined shell, executed in a Fiberglass/Dyneema/Carbon matrix, forms a solid first line of defense. Internally, a dual-density EPS core provides critical Energy Management which reduces transmitted impact forces. Of course safety is best maintained by avoiding the crash altogether. To this end, the Variant features a reshaped eyeport which provides enhanced peripheral vision. The Variant’s™ unique visor system also contributes to improved vision. When properly designed, such as on the Variant™, the visor can help block bright sunlight while producing minimal lift characteristics. Couple this with our Fog-Free coating and it is obvious why the vision aspects of the Variant™ are superior. Another important method of increasing safety is to reduce rider fatigue. Excessive heat buildup can result in both discomfort and distraction. Neither is a good situation. The Variant’s™ extensive venting system works at all speeds, providing necessary airflow to the helmet interior. The airflow works in conjunction with the wicking Hydradry™ liner to effectively reduce heat buildup.

Icon Variant Helmet Sizing

Helmet Sizing Information. To achieve proper helmet fitment, begin by finding your head circumference size using the method described below. Remember that the helmet sizing you choose should fit around the crown of your head comfortably with no pressure points. The cheekpads should fit firmly around your face. Once your chin strap is fastened, grab the chin bar of the helmet and move it side to side. Your cheeks should move with the helmet, which should not slide across your face. Different thickness cheekpads can be purchased to obtain the perfect fit.

Head Measurement Instructions.Wrap a flexible tape measure around your head approximately one inch above eyebrows and ears. Use this measurement (in either inches or centimeters) to find your helmet size in the chart below.

I love this helmet, the anti-fog coating on the visor is great. visor gives the helmet a good look too. Any moisture runs off the visor and barely affects the vision. This is a very cool helmet both in looks and in air flow. Ventilation is excellent without much wind noise. Fitting is great too.

The Icon Variant is a whole new direction for Icon. They've taken the popular look and style of a dual sport helmet and packed it with features for the street. It is DOT and ECE approved and meets world standard.

The Icon Variant has a fiberglass, dynema, and carbon fiber tri composite shell that makes this helmet very shock absorbent and lightweight. This Variant is a medium and weighs three point nine pounds. The solid colorways of this helmet start at a mere three hundred and fifty dollars. So, you're getting a carbon fiber helmet with a radical new design for not a ton of money. Now, depending on the graphic, they do go up to about 550 so pay attention to the different colorways when ordering. As far as fitment goes, Icon has given the Variant a long oval headform so you are going to get that snug fit on the cheeks and around the head that you want for higher speed riding, without the hotspots on the forehead.

Let's take a look at some of the features.

The front has this sculpted shape and molded EPS Nose that reduces shield fogging and gives the Variant its unique look.

Icon really puts a lot of focus on helmet airflow and ventilation and this Variant is no different. There are five oversized intake vents that create nine channels of airflow and four oversized exhaust ports. All of the intake vents are adjustable to some level. One large vent on the chin bar vents to the inside of the helmet including up to the face shield. This large vent is adjustable using the rocker switch; you push it up to close it and down to open it. The vent is also adjustable using the internal sliders. Each of these sliders has four positions including closed.

There are two brow vents and two peak visor vents both of which are adjustable and easy to find with a glove on. On the back you will find four extractor vents, two at the top and two at the bottom.

The peak visor is permanently attached and blocks sunlight, channels air into the vents, and increases negative lift.

The face shield on the variant is all new. It is scratch resistant, fog free, and removable. The shield removal has a couple extra steps compared to their other helmets but it's not bad. To remove the shield, you have to first take off the side plate. You're supposed to need a tool for this, but we'll come back to that. Then, using the shield key Icon provides you, unscrew the gearplate bolt. Next, pull on the visor to release it from the gearplate. Finally open the face shield and then pull it free from the gear plate.

The Variant has a fully removable and washable HydraDry Interior. The contoured cheek pads have these clever cutouts to allow the chin strap to recess into them. This allows optimal pressure against your face for a quiet ride and minimal buffeting.

The Icon Variant helmet is of very high quality, but there are a couple of things I don't love about this particular helmet. The first is these side plates. Many riders push the helmet down on their head with both hands when putting their helmet on. While you should technically use the chinstraps, I see riders use the top of the helmet all the time, so it should be considered when engineering. Here's the problem. If you apply any pressure to the sun viser, the cover place begins to pop off. Snag it with a glove, and it's gone. The other thing I noticed on this particular helmet is the paint. There seems to be an excessive amount of orange peel and overspray. Now, that could be just this one helmet, but these are usually sprayed many at a time so it's tough to say.
