This new R1000X helmet from Joe Rocket is a perfect choice for the rider looking for a reasonably priced, Snell rated helmet with the just about the boldest graphics you can get. The shell is again DOT and Snell approved and made of a blend of polycarbonate and ABS plastic. At sub one hundred and seventy dollars, this three and a half pound full face is a very good value. The shape is intermediate oval, and the size chart is right on the bucks, so be sure to measure your head and refer to the chart to get the perfect fit. The stand out feature of this R1000X for me is the boldness of the available colorways. This helmet is available in two graphics that are comprised of some of the loudest colors I’ve ever seen on a helmet. This graphic, the Lithium, is available in five seriously intense colors including this blue and silver. There is another graphic available called the Blaster that has three colorways of its own. The R1000X has a couple of systems in place that really make it stand out in this low price point. I’m really impressed by the shield and baseplate systems. The UV resistant face shield has a 3D shape, meaning it is curved on both a vertical and horizontal axis. This improves aerodynamics and minimizes image distortion. The inside of the shield is coated with a fog resistant coating, and the exterior is treated with a hardened anti-scratch coating. One of the most popular add-ons to any street inspired full face helmet is a tinted shield. Well, you can keep your wallet in your pocket on this one, because Joe Rocket gives you one for free. To swap the shields, you simply pull forward on this lever and the shield will pop free. When installing the shield, make sure you push the lever all the way back until it clicks into place. While we’re looking at the side plate, let’s take a look at this detent bar. This is the feature that I think riders will notice the most during everyday use. The tab arrangement promotes smooth and easy operation in most of the raised shield positions. The bottom two positions have very stiff action, though. So, the closed position is very snug, and so is the first open position. This is a really handy feature at street speeds. It allows you to ride with the shield partially open on exceptionally hot or humid days, without worrying about the shield rising unexpectedly when you turn your head to check your blind spot. Joe Rocket has also added a new eye port gasket design to the R1000X. This new design does a good job of minimizing wind noise and keeps precipitation from getting behind the shield.
Joe Rocket has also done an exceptional job with the ventilation. The two position front chin vent channels air to the faceshield to reduce fogging and the two flanking vents channel air directly to the face and cheek pads. The outer vents are controlled with these hidden dials that are imbedded into the chinbar EPS. The adjustable forehead vents work together with these spoiler vents to cool the helmet by drawing hot, moist air out of the back of the helmet. Joe Rocket calls this partnership the Quadport 2.0 Ventilation System. As the air passes through these channels in the shell, the channels get smaller, increasing the velocity of the air. The spoiler that these exhaust vents are incorporated into helps to magnify the low pressure Venturi effect to create a pulling of air. There are additional exhaust ports as well, found below the face shield base plates and below the spoiler on both sides of the helmet.
The last feature I would like to show you today is the liner system. The padding in this R1000X is very plush, and is covered in Qwickdry material. The pads are removable and washable, and are removed in the usual manner. With the padding removed, you can see that there are no cutouts for speakers in the EPS. The helmet will still accommodate a communication system, but be sure to choose a system with a low profile speaker. You can also see the vent channels in the dual density EPS liner.
