Speed and Strength has released multiple new jackets as part of the launch of the new Authentic American Line. This line of apparel encapsulates the rebelliousness of vintage styling. It tells a story of when motorcycling was taboo – a past time reserved only for the anti-social outlaw. It does this while quietly adding the safety features and contemporary detailing you would expect in a piece of modern motorcycle apparel from Speed and Strength.
The first new jacket we’re looking at is this new Bikes Are In My Blood leather jacket. This hard looking throwback is made using 1.2 mm premium cowhide leather and features low profile, CE approved armor in the shoulders, elbows, and back. Speed And Strength is taking away all the reasons for not wearing leather with this jacket. There is as much perforation in this leather as in many textile mesh jackets, and you’ll see this perforation is a recurring theme throughout all of the leathers in this new lineup. This jacket is going to be comfortable all the way up to about eighty degrees so there are no more excuses for not wearing your jacket. They even included a removable thermal vest liner for cooler days but honestly it probably isn’t going to do much with all this ventilation. For this jacket to be warm, you would definitely need some windproof heated gear. This is definitely going to be a warm weather leather. The styling is undoubtedly old school, with pillow top shoulders, a patinated finish on the leather, and the metal buckle adjusters at the waist. The laser etched designs on shoulder and back are a great example of the use of modern technology to establish a vintage look.
Next in the lineup is the Nixon Replica Leather Jacket. Gary Nixon rolled a Triumph to two AMA Grand National Championships in ’67 and ’68 and this jacket looks like one that might have come right out of his trailer. It’s made of the same patinated 1.2mm leather, and has the same perforated arms as the Bikes Are In My Blood Jacket. It sports full CE approved armor, and all leather patchwork on the chest, arms and back. It has adjustable buckles at the waist, and a low profile banded style collar. This is another jacket that is going to perform best in milder weather, but has a generous enough cut that fitting a wind and waterproof heated liner or jacket under it should be easy.
Next we have one of my favorites, the Rooke Customs leather jacket. Jesse Rooke is a custom motorcycle builder that builds bikes in much the same way as S/S designs Jackets. He is famous for using modern components and building practices to create vintage style creations that not only look the part, but also perform. Honestly, if you haven’t already seen Jesse’s work, you should check out his website. His bikes are really cool. This jacket features the familiar breathable, perforated inner arms and expansion joints in the shoulders, with extra perf on the front just below the pillow top shoulder pads and down the center of the back. My favorite feature is this cool little pocket on the sleeve for pizza crust. The opening is kinda small, so for New York style you may have to fold the crust in half to get it to fit, but it’s a handy feature never-the-less. The sleeves also feature the Rooke Customs logo on one shoulder and speed and Strength embroidered on the other. Inside the jacket, you will find a hidden zippered pocket and a removable, quilted thermal liner.
The last of the leather jackets in the new lineup is this Top Dead Center Jacket. This jacket has sort of a vintage race feel and is made of very soft and supple leather. This jacket comes in three color ways including all black, blue and black, and red and black. The blue and red color ways have mismatched sleeves. I have to say, I really like Speed and Strength, but some of the styling cues on this jacket sort of escape me. I think it’s the patches. The winged piston is a cool design, but the engine jargon they use is a little contradictory. Top Dead Center is the part of the stroke where the piston is at its farthest point away from the crankshaft. Add fuel, spark, and air, or combustion in this case, and you have two or three crank revolutions at best before engine detonation. I suppose this is just me being picky. At least the patch on the other shoulder makes sense. Nothing says Authentic American like a high compression lightning cow. I digress. I heart you Speed and Strength.
The next jackets we have for you today are the new Cruise Missile and the Ladies American Beauty. These jackets are made of a combination of what SS calls their AR600 textile fabric, and leather panels that span the chest and the outside of the arms. Both are available in two color ways, black with off white panels and orange accents, and grey with black panels, with red accent stripes on the ladies version. The men’s and ladies jacket features are fairly similar, with lightweight nylon zippers, accordion style stretch panels and expandable seems in the shoulders, and adjustable gussets in the sleeves. They have CE approved armor throughout, with zippered vents in the biceps area, and expandable zippered gussets in the derriere area for a customizable fit. The ladies jacket has some extra touches, like buckle type adjusters at the waist and decorative stitching on the back to accentuate the shape.
This next jacket is the successor to The Off The Chain jacket, appropriately called the Off The Chain 2.0. This is another example of how motorcycle apparel companies are making gear that works on and off the bike. This jacket features SS’s AR-600 water resistant shell and low profile CE approved armor in the shoulders, elbows, and back. The Off The Chain is available in three color ways, this distressed grey version, an all-black color way, and black with high viz orange panels in the arms and rib area. The most notable feature for sure is the full sleeve, removable hoody with extra-long cuffs with thumb holes, that can be removed from the shell and worn by itself. No Speed and Strength jacket would be complete without a little branding. On the Off the Chain jacket, it can be found on the left sleeve and on the shoulder on the back in the form of these stitchless, rubberized logos.
Lastly, we have the ladies Heart and Soul textile jacket. This jacket is constructed using SS’s familiar AR-600 fabric and comes in three color ways. There is this distressed gray version with red embroidery, a white version with black embroidery, and a black version with white embroidery. This is a cool looking ladies jacket. You almost have to see it in person to truly appreciate it. There is definitely a vintage feel from the pillow top shoulders and corrugated area on the lower back, but with this ornate tribal looking embroidery on the sleeve, waistband, and upper back. It has an adjustable waist belt, zippered vents on the biceps, and a full sleeve, removable, quilted thermal liner.
