The Dogs of War line from Speed and Strength pays homage to the working canines of the U.S. Armed Forces. The collection consists of an SS 700 helmet, this jacket, and mens and womens casual apparel. A part of the proceeds from every item sold are donated to the Warrior Dog Foundation, a charity that works to transition these animals from active duty to their final handlers, including civilian placement. I appreciate my motorcycles almost as much as I appreciate my dog, so I really enjoyed researching Mike Ritland’s project. For more information, go to warriordogfoundation.org and check out Mike’s interview on “60 Minutes”. It will give you a whole new respect for our nation’s fearless four legged warriors.
Let’s get a closer look at this jacket. The chassis is made of an enzyme washed cotton and polyester blend, and is available in black and olive. This is a really cool fabric for a motorcycle jacket because it lays on your body like broken in denim, making i look like regular clothing. But, the poly toughens it up a bit, and will help it better stand up to sunlight. The twin breast pockets, double stitched seams, and the reinforced areas in the shoulders and elbows give this jacket the look of army fatigues.
Features include a zip off hood and main closure that both feature YKK zippers. There are two zippered hand warmer pockets and two chest pockets for storage. Protection comes from very lightweight and flexible CE rated Vault armor in the shoulders and elbows. There is also articulated CE armor in the back. Speed and Strength has really raised the standard as far as back armor is concerned. As of this year, they have CE rated armor in most of the jackets they sell. Most brands lower priced jackets use only EVA foam back pads.
